According to the Oxford Languages definition, social media consists of “websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.” (Oxford Languages) However, that definition doesn’t quite explain what social media is, what it does, its impacts, and, most importantly, how to remain secure when browsing. Thanks to the internet and social media, we as humans are more connected than ever, but as we continuously share our lives with the world. It is important to remember that entities run these websites and applications and may not always have their user’s best interests in mind. Here is where I hope to provide some helpful insight into what exactly social media is and what lurks behind each tap and swipe we take.
